"Painting my own story, taking control and redrawing the lines, in
order to produce more authentic representations of the female body."
‘Heidi Yssennagger’s art explores issues relating to body image, identity and health. These concerns are articulated through her use of the unhealthy body as nude figure. For Yssennagger this serves as a challenge to the norms of femininity and the traditional aesthetic categories of beauty that were imposed on the female nude. One commentator has noted how the ‘…forms, conventions and poses of art have worked metaphorically to shore up the female body – to seal orifices and to prevent marginal matter from transgressing the boundary dividing the inside of the body from the outside, the self from the space of the other’ (Nead 1992: 6). It is this formulation of the female body that Yssennagger seeks to confront and interrogate.’
